Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook; 1962

Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook; 1962

"Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook", Copyright 1953, 1962 edition. A classic cookbook for anyone who loves to cook and loves to eat. Lots of great old-fashioned recipes and mid-century meals. Lots of photos and cute little 50's and 60's style drawings.

My Grandmother Burnside had the exact copy of this cookbook she purchased new. When my mother married she was given this cookbook, and burnt the cover and the edges of the pages, when she placed it in the drawer below the built in oven, in 1984. She was baking a cake and smelt something, upon entering the kitchen, she realized where the smell was coming from - the cookbook. It did not go up in flames, but it was damaged.

In 2008 we were touring the old Tommy Webb home, they were holding an Estate Sale, and in the kitchen sat an exact replica of the "Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook". Copyright 1953, 1962 edition. We purchased it for $3.00! What a sweet fine, a treasure of sorts. Well, I now own that treasure and use the recipes to this day. The recipes my Grandmother used for her family. The recipes my mother used with her family. And now, I use them in my meal planning. Last week, I used the Tuna Casserole recipe, and it was delicious! This cookbook with its pages yellowed and stained, has found a place in my heart and in my home.

My Baker's Rack housing my cookbooks.

There on my Baker's Rack are my cookbooks.

Well, I have two other editions of "Better Homes and Garden New Cookbook(s). The recipes are simpler, they use many convenient type foods. For example, the Tuna Casserole is not as good, it leaves out many ingredients from the old version. I noticed this was true with most recipes. These recipes were developed for the 'modern woman' whose jobs are not limited to taking care of the house, husband and children - but who works 40 hours, runs their daughters to dance, their sons to soccer, picks up the dry cleaning and groceries, and still all does the rest.
